With just two rounds of the THQ AMA Supercross series remaining, Moto XXX is reaching mid-season form and turning in consistent results. At the most recent round, held in Seattle’s new Qwest Field, both Kyle Lewis and Justin Buckelew placed themselves in the 250cc main event and rode with confidence for 20 laps.
The 2005 season has seen such stiff competition in the 250cc class, that it’s been rare to see privateer teams place multiple riders in the mains. With the outdoor season just around the corner, those kinds of performances couldn’t come at a better time.
Justin Buckelew led the way in Seattle by finishing 13th in the main, his best 250 class finish of the year. Of course, “J-Buck” had been away from the big bike while riding the Honda CRF250R in the 125cc East region. He finished 11th in that series, had a few top ten finishes and was always among the top privateers on the track. Perhaps more importantly, he was able get some valuable testing done on the 250F, testing that will be a huge benefit once Nick Evennou returns to the 125 class.
Kyle Lewis was having a good night in Seattle as well. Like Buckelew, he transferred to the main event by finishing second in his semi. He got a good start in the main and looked like a threat to crack the top ten until another “un-Lucky” crash ended his night prematurely. The upside is that Kyle is still healthy and remains in the top 20 in 250cc Supercross points.
As mentioned above, Nick Evennou hasn’t been able to do much testing on the Moto XXX CRF250R because of an injury suffered during pre-season practice.
Fortunately, the broken wrist has been healing well and Nick is back on the bike. He is scheduled to re-join the team at Hangtown and contest the entire outdoor national series in the 125cc class.
The Supercross series will remain on the west coast for the final two rounds in Houston and Las Vegas. The latter has always been considered a hometown event for Kyle Lewis and he always seems to step it up there. Buckelew will complete the Supercross series aboard the 2-stroke Honda CR250R, but is scheduled to switch to the 4-stroke CRF450R for the Nationals.
