This weekend Glen Helen Raceway hosted Round 1 of the WMA National Series. BlueStarrMX.com rider Tarah Gieger took first place followed in second by teammate Sarah Whitmore.

The riders have been in California since early this week preparing for the race with the help of their mechanic dads Bill Gieger and Terry Whitmore with support from Dave Donocheck at Motocross Adventures based out of Anaheim as well as our newest sponsor PPG Automotive.

Arriving in style with the Ramp and Camp style Freedom by Coachman provided by RicharsonsRV.com of Temecula, Sun City, and Riverside Whitmore and Gieger were ready to race.

The first moto kicked off at noon with Gieger barely loosing the Sick Racing Holeshot Award to Jessica Patterson. Patterson wasn’t able to keep the lead for more than 30 seconds when Gieger blew past her. In the lead for most of the moto despite only having ridden a few times since her broken pelvis injury sustained at Gaterback at the end of January, Patterson ultimately made the pass. With just a couple laps to go Gieger was hot on Patterson’s tail and passed her when she stalled out, allowing Gieger to finish first.

Meanwhile Whitmore was engaged in battle with former team mate Tania Satchwell for fourth. Able to make the pass Whitmore took off to catch third place veteran Stefy Bau, StefyBau.com. Unfortunately Whitmore crashed in a turn giving Bau more breathing room while allowing Satchwell to return to fourth. Jumping right back on her bike Whitmore took off to again pass Satchwell just in time to finish fourth.

In the second moto Gieger won the Sick Racing Holeshot Award with Patterson and Whitmore close behind. Patterson ran into some more bad luck and crashed giving Gieger and Whitmore a lead that could not be caught. With Gieger sweeping both motos she finished first and said, “I’ve never won both motos so I am really excited about this accomplishment.

I’m so fast on my Yamaha YZ250F and with the boost from Skaterade I was ready to go and see how well I could do after being out with injuries.” Whitmore was just as pleased with her results and said, “It’s really great to be out here at Glen Helen.

My Yamaha YZ125 is so fast and light, and my MSR gear is really well ventilated so I was able to come from fourth in the first moto to second overall without feeling overheated.” Even team manager Tateum Bowers was thrilled with the team’s results and said, “It was great for the team take the top two positions this weekend and emerge as the WMA leaders. The bikes were looking great thanks to Jason over at N-Style.com and the team is ready to do it again next weekend at Hangtown.”

With this the most anticipated event of the WMA season Miki Keller, president of the WMA, put on a great program and got Fuel TV to film for upcoming episodes of GKA while also wrangling Speedvision’s Two Wheel Tuesday in to shoot.

Keller had this to say, “With almost a full gate here today these women put on a great race for their fans. Our pro program has been growing by leaps and bounds with more and more amateur girls turning pro each year so the races will just continue to get more competitive.” WomensMotocrossAssociation.com.

The competition was certainly hot this weekend. Round 2 of the WMA National Series will be held in conjunction with the AMA National Outdoor Series on Saturday at Hangtown.
