Most of the AMA Motocross Nationals paddock hadn’t seen the Thunder Valley track in Lakewood, CO until they showed up for last weekend’s national and Team Honda/Moto XXX was no exception. Like most riders on the circuit, the riders enjoyed the layout and the chance to experience a completely different venue. There was a good feeling around the team semi that surfaced on the track as well.

One of the weekend’s biggest storylines for the team was the return of its leader, Kyle Lewis. “Lucky” had been out for most of the nationals with various fractures in his hands and returned just three weeks after breaking the thumb on his throttle hand. Though his final moto results didn’t reflect it, Kyle rode very well and avoided any further injury. He got top ten starts in both motos and showed plenty of speed to stay there, but ran into bad luck, crashed twice in the first race and was unable to finish due to bike damage. The technicians back at the truck successfully prepared his bike for the second moto, where he got another great start and was riding around the top ten before being taken out by former Moto XXX pilot Nick Wey. “I saw Nick get out of control on the far side of the track”, Kyle explained afterward, “but I honestly thought he’d be able to sav! e it before he got all the way over to me. That’s why I didn’t back off. Unfortunately, it didn’t work in my favor, but it was an accident, just one of those things.”

Justin Buckelew continued his string of solid results, finishing 14
th
overall in the 250cc class. Once again, he started well and came very close to adding to the impressive string of holeshots he has this summer. Best of all, “Bucky” moved up two spots in the standings to 16
th
. He sits just 7 points out of the top 15 in the series and has high hopes of breaking that barrier very soon.

After a short-lived and ill-fated attempt to qualify for last weekend’s 125cc National, Jessica Patterson had to ride with an injured collarbone in Colorado as the Women’s Motocross Association resumed its 2005 series. Forgetting the pain, Jess rode exceptionally well and won the first moto. She got a great start in the second moto as well, but fell shortly after. She got up slowly, but re-mounted and worked her way back up to 6
th
place before the checkers flew. She ended up 4
th
overall on the day, but retained her lead in the championship. She wasn’t allowed to rest just yet, though, as one of her competitors decided to shake things up. “I’m protesting Jessica for
displacement because I weigh 25 poun! ds less than her and she’s pulling me up all the hills”, said one of the riders trying to claim Jess’ #1 plate. Of course, WMA officials found the Moto XXX Honda CRF250R to be perfectly legal.
