Carmichael rode his Makita Suzuki RMZ450 to convincing wins in both motos at Spring Creek Motocross Park leading every lap.
“It was a good day for me,” said Carmichael whose record winning streak is now up to 24 races dating back to July of 2003. “I put my head down and rode some good laps. The track got pretty rough like it always does and the shadows were a little tough to deal with late in the day. It’s getting late in the season, but I can’t afford to lose focus.”
The win was Carmichael’s 58th-career AMA 250 National victory.
Honda riders Kevin Windham and Ernesto Fonseca finished second and third respectively.
For Windham it was just more of the same as he finished runner-up to Carmichael for the fifth straight time. “Second is getting kind of boring,” said Windham, the last rider to beat Carmichael in motocross. “It’s getting to the point that I just race the clock. I’m doing the best I can do. I’ve got to find another second per lap and hope that Ricky doesn’t find one.”
Taking full advantage of Chad Reed and James Stewart’s absence, Fonseca took his second straight podium. The Costa Rican native moved to third in the standings.
Andrew Short rode a factory Honda to victory in the 125 class. It marked his first AMA national victory and moved the Colorado native from fifth to second in the 125cc series standings.
I really wanted to win in Colorado, but I’m grateful to finally get my first win,” Short said. “This does wonders for my confidence. I’m going into win every race the rest of the season. My goal this year was to podium. I did that then the goal shifted to get a win. I was fortunate to get a good start and put it all together.”
Mike Alessi was second on the Red Bull KTM. It marked a triumphant return for the phenom, after having a let down in his professional debut at this track last year.
“I’m finally healed up and feeling healthy,” Alessi said. “I should be able to turn it on in the last three races. I know I can’t think about the championship unless (Ivan) Tedesco has a DNF. He hasn’t had one yet, so you never know.”
Josh Grant was third. It marked his third podium of the year and moved him into a tie with Mike Brown for fourth in the standings.
Ivan Tedesco protected his series lead with a fifth overall. He has a commanding 51-point lead over Short with three nationals remaining.
The series moves to Binghamton, New York, next Sunday.
