The Grand Prix of Netherlands will hold a special place in the memories of Yamaha staff as the Japanese manufacturer captured the MX1 and MX2 Motocross World Championships before the final round of the series in Holland today. Antonio Cairoli could not climb the podium but secured his first MX2 title while Stefan Everts won both heats and collected his ninth World Title with style.

Sun, sand and champagne could summarise perfectly the Grand Prix of Netherlands even if the terrain was tough and really deep this year in Lierop. “I think I have never raced on a track so demanding,” confirmed MX2 winner Tyla Rattray during the press conference. The South African teenager claimed his second GP win in a row with a runner-up position behind his team-mate Marc De Reuver in the first race and then dominated the following heat. “In the first moto I think that it was not good to be leading most of the race as De Reuver was able to watch my lines and follow my rhythm. So in the second heat I had a good start and pulled away quickly,” offered Tyla. There was a race within a race between title contenders Antonio Cairoli and Andrew McFarlane, and despite a wrist injury contracted during the qualifying race, the Italian teenager went on to clinch the title. “In the first race I had a good start but I had pain in my wrist and finish seventh, two positions before McFarlane. I got another good start in the second race but Caps crashed and I couldn’t avoid him. I was last and came back to eighth, that was enough to take the title as McFarlane struggled and retired,” explained Antonio.

In the MX1 class Stefan Everts was the boss today and showed amazing speed in the sand. The Belgian rider had two great starts and led the entire opening moto, pulling his series advantage over Coppins to 50 points. He needed to obtain just one point more than his rival in the second race but Stefan wanted more! He grabbed another holeshot with Ben Townley right behind him. Forced to come back from last to fourth after a crash at the start of the first race, Ben took the lead in the opening lap and tried to pull away but Stefan didn’t give up. The reigning World Champion hit the front once more on the fifth circulation, and escaped to the heat win and his third double-win of the season. “Today had been a perfect day for me and for sure the track helped a lot. I like so much to ride in the sand and I felt much better today than a week ago. In the first moto I managed to pull the gap between me and Josh and in the second one I knew when I saw Ben behind me that he would be a tough rival. He is a great sand rider, I followed him during the first laps but then it was time to push a little bit further and I had the energy to do that. I think that everybody was really tired today, I was tired too as the track was really rough,” concluded the legendary Belgian rider who will test the 2006 Yamaha next Thursday in Italy. With nine World titles and 86 GP wins, he is forever a legend of Motocross!
