2005 FIM SUPERMOTO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RACES GP5 – IRELAND (Bishopscourt)
Double success for Chambon and first GP win of the season for Lazzarini
Boris Chambon and Ivan Lazzarini won the fifth round of the 2005 FIM Supermoto World Championship in Ireland. The Frenchman dominates the S2 class, while the Italian got his first win of the season in the main class.

The weather finally didn’t affect too much the racing in Bishopscourt, as it didn’t rain at all on Saturday. The warm-up as well as the races took place on a dry track, including the off-road section. “Yesterday we didn’t use the off-road section in order to keep the asphalt clean and preserve the circuit for the races,” explained Marc Pauwels, the FIM race director. It was the best solution, and the layout on the former Royal Air Force airport offered good racing in both classes.
Second in qualification Boris Chambon claimed the super-pole on Saturday morning, and nobody was able to battle with him in the S2 series! Boris got the holeshot in both races and claimed his first ever double win in a GP, coming back strongly in the championship standings. Leader since the opening race of the season, Eddy Seel got his first overall podium since Castelleto; fifth in the first race, the Belgian rider finished runner-up in the next one and got a third position overall behind Chambon and Frédéric Bolley. Bolley and his team-mate Jerome Giraudo finished both races in the top four on the bi-cylinder Aprilia. Second and third Bolley finally beats Giraudo who did two mistakes in the off-road section during the second race and missed the podium.
Coming back from a bad injury, Thierry Van Den Bosch led the first S1 race and got another win, followed by Ivan Lazzarini and Gerald Delepine. Leading the second race VDB lost the leadership when he did a mistake in the off-road section, and he was in third position when Czech Michal Havel collided with him. Both crashed, and VDB was unable to finish the race with a damaged hand! Leading the race Italian Ivan Lazzarini got the overall win, his first success aboard the factory Husqvarna. His team-mate Gerald Delepine ended second, followed by German Bernd Hiemer who had a car accident earlier in the week and was delighted to preserve the leadership of the series.
Ivan Lazzarini: “Yesterday I didn’t had a good feeling with the track, I felt a little bit sick but I had a good night and today was another day. We used the off-road section today and it was better for me. In the first race I finished second but had some troubles with the settings as the track was bumpy in some places. We changed them and in the second heat the bike was perfect, and when I saw that VDB crashed I knew that I could win the GP. I missed a lot of points this season with two punctures, I crashed in Namur and damaged my brake, I was pretty unlucky and now it’s important for me to score many points in each race. “
Boris Chambon: “I never won two heats during a GP, it was a perfect weekend and I’m happy to get for the first time in my career a double win. Since Sosnova I have great results and I’m really happy, that’s good for my confidence. The team has brought some novelties on the engine and I felt more comfortable on the bike, it was time to have strong results after the disappointing beginning of season. Now I take it race by race, I don’t want to calculate and think about the championship. I was struggling mentally earlier this season as I didn’t got good results, now I’m strong again and I’m happy to offer good results to KTM.”
