Team Solitaire/Kingdom/FLY Racing Honda Event Update

Team Solitaire/Kingdom/FLY Racing Honda Event Update

Millville, MN
August 12th, 2007

The AMA Motocross National Series moved halfway across the country, to picturesque Millville, Minnesota, for round nine of the 2007 campaign. With a week off for the riders and team crew leading up to this event, the atmosphere was charged and the stage was set for a great weekend of racing action.

Last year at Millville we endured some treacherous conditions as the rain fell steady and hard on Sunday afternoon. It looked like this year would be equally bad after rainstorms pounded the tracks with several inches of rain on both Friday and Saturday. But as the sun rose on Sunday morning, it brought with it blue skies and ideal track conditions.

Ricky Renner
Practice: After posting the 12th fastest lap time in Saturday’s qualification practice, Ricky rode to 27th quickest in Sunday’s practices session which determines gate pick for the motos. He had a tangle with Josh Grant early in the first practice session which cut his track time short.

Moto One: Ricky had a mid-pack start in the first moto and was sitting 27th at the end of the first lap. On lap two he crashed which put back to dead last and a pretty large deficit. He rode out the race and finished 33rd in the moto.

Moto Two: Ricky was sitting a little bit better off the start in the second moto but this time didn’t even make it through lap one before hitting the ground hard. He hit his head in the crash and suffered a minor concussion.

Summary:
Ricky is doing fine, just a little banged up after his dismal weekend. His moto tally of 33/38 earned him 39th overall on the day.

Ryan Clark
Practice: I felt great on the bike from the time I hit the track on Saturday morning. Millville has long been one of my favorite nationals and it showed when the lap charts came in. I was 7th quickest on Saturday and 12th fastest in Sunday’s practice sessions. I was feeling good and ready to put in some solid results.

Moto One: I am not a fan of right-hand first corners, especially one as high speed as Millville. Perhaps this is why I was a little apprehensive in the first corner. I was around 20th out of the first bend, but had moved up to 17th by the end of lap one. On the second lap I made a big mistake in the whoops and ran off the track, losing three positions as a result. I again began moving up and was in 16th on the final lap. There was a pack of four riders within two seconds at the finish, but I could not move through and settled for 16th in the moto.

Moto Two: I had a pretty bad start in the second moto, but there were several hard crashes all around me which caused a red-flag signifying they would restart the race. My second start was quite a bit better, again inside the top 20. Within a few laps I was up to 12th and had closed in on Michael Byrne. I went outside in the corner before the finish line and lost my front end in the deep dirt. Upon remounting, I was all the way back to 17th. Within a few laps I was already back up in the top 15 and charging hard. As the laps wore on I slipped by Kyle Lewis for 11th and set my sights on Michael Byrne once again. I thought I had the pass made on a steep downhill but Byrne cut over hard and took away my line away. I kept the pressure on and two corners later Byrne went down hard, handing me 10th position in the moto.

Summary: My 16/10 moto scores were good enough to award me 10th place overall on the weekend. I was very pleased with my second moto, I just wish I could have moved through the pack as quickly in the first go around.

Other Notes

I have to give a lot of credit for my recent improvements to Mike Battista from MB1 Suspension. After a day of testing at Milestone MX in Riverside, CA last Wednesday, my bike was handling awesome and was very confidence inspiring. Thanks to Mike, Steve, Marty and Melissa from MB1 for all of their hard work.

Thanks also go out to Doug and the whole crew at Dubach Racing Exhaust for coming up with some great new settings to try this weekend as well.

Jed Mingo, our transport driver, had an eventful drive to Millville. He hit a deer in the semi causing some damage to the front passenger-side corner of the truck and damaging the grill. Unfortunately, the deer faired far worse.

With another off weekend in the schedule, we will have a little more time to work on our settings and finish out the year strong. Things for me will start to get interesting now, as my wife Cassandra is 36 weeks pregnant. I am hoping the big day comes after the final race at Glen Helen, but I will be ready whenever it does.

Jiri Dostal was scheduled to come back for Millville, but we opted to push it back to Steel City just to give him some more time in Texas training with Ivan Tedesco and getting back his speed and confidence. Jiri will be back at Steel City and ready to put his Team Solitaire/Kingdom/FLY Racing Honda up in the front of the pack.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support. See you at the races!

All the best,

Ryan Clark

CLASS: 50 CC STOCK SHAFT DRIVE

Tyler Lang Loretta lynn’s

CLASS: 50 CC STOCK SHAFT DRIVE

Tyler’s first race he finished 3rd after falling trying to triple the 10 commandments. He did however, successfully double them which he was the only pw50 jumping them the whole week. He got on the podium and received the bronze metal. That was the best part of the week for him. Well, meeting Ricky Carmichael was probably better, he didn’t want to wash his hand after Ricky gave him high five and wished him good luck.

Tyler’s second race he finished 4th. He had a terrible start, got stuck behind a bunch of riders. He was in 15th position in the 1st lap and worked his way to 4th.

Tyler’s 3rd and final race he had an awesome start. He got the hole shot then another rider took him out at the first corner. He was in 12th and made it up to 5th.

He tied for 2nd place overall. The other rider had a better 3rd moto finish which put Tyler 3rd overall! For the most part, he had faster lap times than the 1st and 2nd place rider’s. Just had rotten luck.

He is really glad that he is done riding the pw50’s.

Future races other than Dade City Points series, will be racing his KTM in the Gold Cup Series, then the Mini O’s in November.

Team Solitaire/Kingdom/FLY Racing Honda Event Update

Team Solitaire/Kingdom/FLY Racing Honda Event Update
X-Games 13
Carson, CA

The largest and most televised and publicized spectacle in “extreme sports” is known as the X-Games. For the first time in its 13-year history, Moto X (known traditionally as Supercross) was added to the event. 16 of the fastest riders in the world were invited to compete for a coveted X-Games medal in front of an estimated 750 million households worldwide.

I was fortunate enough be included in the inaugural event which featured a unique format to emphasize the close racing and excitement that is Supercross. The format featured four separate heats of four riders with only the winner advancing to the main feature. The remaining riders were broken into two semi-qualifiers with six riders, with again only the winner advancing to the six-rider main event.

Practice: The riders were given one hour of practice on Friday and one on Saturday morning. I was happy with my bike set up right away and felt very good on the track despite having not ridden much Supercross since the final event of the 2007 AMA Supercross Series at Sam Boyd Stadium back in May. We were given transponders for practice, but I never did see a printout of my lap times during the weekend. I felt comfortable and fast, and I had a feeling that it was going to be a good weekend for me.

Heat One: I was in the first of four heats. The other riders in my heat were Kevin Windham, Jason Thomas and Grant Langston. When the gate dropped I spun a little bit but used a low line in the first turn to emerge with the holeshot. I led the first two laps before succumbing to the pressure of Kevin Windham in the whoops. A lap later Grant Langston got the better of me, although I managed to square him off and get him back. On the next lap he made it stick and set off after Kevin. I finished 3rd in the six-lap race and would have to ride in the semi qualifier.

Semi-Qualifer One: The riders in my semi included Langston and Thomas, along with Josh Grant, Eric Sorby and the ever-talented Travis Pastrana. I had a much better jump off the gate this time and went high in the first turn. I emerged in second place hot on the heels of Grant Langston. I did everything I could to keep pace with Grant, but he pulled out about two seconds on me by the second lap. At one point, I closed back in slightly as I could feel the pressure of Travis Pastrana and didn’t want to let him get too close. At the end of the six-lap race, I was about two seconds back from Langston in a comfortable second position.

Summary: My overall finishing position for the weekend was 7th, one spot shy of main-event qualification. Considering the company, I was extremely pleased with my performance, although I would have definitely liked to be in that main event with Carmichael, Windham, Byrne, Reed, Langston and Vuillemin.

Other notes:
• X-Games is televised with over 14 hours of live coverage around the world on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360.com, SportsCenter and ESPN2’s X Center. Check your local listings for re-airs.
• The whole vibe of this event was incredible. To be with such amazing athletes from a whole variety of sports was just awesome. The Athlete’s Lounge was catered, had drinks, games, television, pool tables, a smoothie bar, couches, indoor golf and all the free swag and goodies you could fit in your backpack. We were treated like superstars.
• Since we didn’t even plan on doing this event until the last minute, Jesse Black and JR Boyd (our two technicians) were actually moving into a new house this weekend. JR stepped in to wrench while my usual mechanic, Jesse, stayed back and did the heavy lifting at home. Jesse came in on Saturday morning to assist, but JR did a great job on the bike and we had a lot of fun working together.
• Two additional people who made this weekend possible were Mike and Melissa Battista of MB1 Suspension. Mike did some last minute suspension for which worked just awesome. The Battista’s also let me use their race transporter as our semi is on the way to Millville, MN for the national this coming weekend. A very special thank you goes out to them for their hospitality throughout the weekend.

Thank you for your continued support and see you at the races!

July 21/22 Agassiz, BC

July 21/22 Agassiz, BC

Sheren and Northrop take CMA National titles!

The Canadian Motorcycle Association (CMA) held their annual National Championships this past weekend in scenic Agassiz, BC. The CMA format is a 4 moto format per class, held over 2 days to determine a National Champion, and each moto is 20 minutes long. The rider turnout was lower than expected with the amount of rain in the area during the week, and the prediction of heavy rain for the weekend. Fortunately, all of the rain fell during the overnight hours and the track was in great shape for racing each day.

It was a grand slam for the Holeshot/Denny’s/FLY/661/Kawasaki team of Brady Sheren and Jeff Northrop as they dominated both days of racing to take home the lions share of the pro payout and each of them now have a National title in the books. Brady raced both of his Pat O’Connor tuned Pro Circuit KX250F and KX450F machines, and won all 4 motos and the championship in the MX2 class over a good effort from Honda’s Lee Coutts. The track was a little greasy in the mornings, but the Pirelli 454 Scorpion tires worked perfectly.

The MX 1 class was really exciting on Saturday for most of each moto. “Norcal” holeshot moto 1 and 2 with Brady close behind, and for the first 15 minutes of each race these two battled it out and Brady tried everything he could to pass Jeff, as he tried to put his home track advantage to good use. Jeff is a seasoned veteran though, and Brady could not quite make anything work and had to settle for 2nd, ahead of Coutts, and Howie Spencer, on an 08 KX450F. With the pouring rain all night on Saturday, the track was a little mucky on Sunday morning, and a holeshot would be a necessity to avoid the roost. Norcal again holeshot both motos and Brady had to deal with Spencer on the first lap of each moto, but after he got by he set his sights on his teammate, and he was able to get within 3 seconds, but was never quite close enough to attempt a pass. In the end it was a good race weekend, with Jeff winning the MX1, and Brady winning the MX2, and 2nd in MX1.

Jeff and Brady would like to thank Holeshot Motorsports, Denny’s, Canadian Kawasaki, Fly Racing, Sixsixone, Pro Circuit, Pirelli, Gaerne, Enjoy Graphics, Ogio, Orthoflex, Mechanix Wear, Scott, Maxima, Sunline, Ogio, and DC.
